Dear Juliette - Winter Blues

Dear Juliette,

Winter has just begun, and I'm already feeling the 'Winter Blues'. No matter what I do, I just can't seem to shake them; what do you recommend? - Betty

Hi Blue Betty,

I can relate to your 'Winter Blues', and I'd be happy to help. After all, I have always been very good at shaking things.

As the days get colder, I find myself spending more and more time just sulking (which so isn't me) out the front of S&K's cellar door. I can sometimes lie for hours out in the cold, just waiting for customers to visit and give me pats, platter scraps and belly scratches.

I've compiled a couple of tips and tricks; I hope they can help raise your spirits and get you through our least favourite season.

#1 – Stay active. I like brisk walks through the vineyard. This way, I can oversee the S&K operations and make sure the viticultrist isn't slacking off. All the while, I am getting in my 10,000 steps, which is relatively easy to do on four legs.

#2 – Start the day fresh. To wake up every morning feeling energised, you'll need your recommended sleep hours. I know my vet recommends 12 – 14 hours a day, sometimes I sleep for 18 – but that's just me, your typical overachiever.

#3 – Try to cut back junk food. I certainly never look to emulate behaviours from Tannin, the winery cat, because she is constantly snacking on her favourite comfort food, field mice, during winter. I'm much more restrained and dignified. If I need to snack, it's usually on carrot sticks, hummus and other healthy produce from the platters of S&K customers who can't resist my pleading eyes and paws.

#4 – Treat yourself. Sure, eating healthy is essential to feel good, but you should still treat yourself occasionally. My go-to winter treat is chicken schnitzel and the occasional can of Friskies when nobody is watching.

And finally...

#5 Combat your winter weight gain. Growing your coat very thick and long over winter allows you to shed a couple of kilos very quickly come your first Spring groom. If you're still feeling a little on the chubby side, just lay down in every photograph taken of you. This will force the photographer to only take photos from above, which will help hide your double chin and winter weight until you're feeling your beautiful self again.

All the best, Juju.
