A family tribute in our 150th year

This very limited Museum Release brings together six vintages of The Prince, the wine created in honour of sixth generation winemaker Christopher Killeen, affectionately known as The Prince of Port.

In the 1990s Chris planted Portuguese varieties such as Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional and Tinto Cão at Stanton and Killeen and helped shape a drier, more fragrant and complex style of Australian vintage port.

After Chris passed away in 2007, the family created The Prince as an innovative dry table wine from his Portuguese plantings. The first two vintages were crafted by his son, seventh generation winemaker Simon Killeen, as a personal tribute to his dad. Simon sadly passed away earlier this year, and The Prince now carries the memories of both Chris and Simon.

Today the Portuguese story at Stanton and Killeen continues with mother and daughter team Wendy and Natasha Killeen, the current custodians of the wirednery. Natasha represents the seventh generation of continuous family ownership. Together they are investing in Portuguese varieties, planting Arinto and Alvarinho and nurturing the established red vines as they gently reshape the estate for a changing climate. The Prince sits at the heart of this journey, linking our fortified heritage with a more modern Iberian inspired future.

In our 150th anniversary year it felt right to open the museum cellar and share a small piece of this story with you. These bottles have been quietly resting in our cellars and this mixed six pack is a genuine one-time release. When these packs are gone, there will be no more.

The mature vintages are drinking beautifully now, showing layers of spice, savoury complexity and silky tannins. The 2022 vintage is our current release, with the structure and freshness to continue to cellar.

A printed story card and individual tasting note cards for each vintage are included inside the pack.

Style

The Prince is a medium bodied, savoury and food friendly red that showcases Portuguese varieties in a Rutherglen setting. Expect vibrant red and black fruits, gentle spice, floral notes and fine tannins that make it a natural partner at the table rather than a heavy, dominating wine.

Each vintage in this pack has its own personality and blend. Tasting them together is a chance to follow the evolution of The Prince across time and to see how the Portuguese varieties respond to different growing seasons in Rutherglen.

How to enjoy it

  • Open a few bottles side by side for a Prince themed dinner or vertical tasting at home

  • Pair with grilled meats, rich vegetable dishes, game, charcuterie and hard cheeses

  • Drink the 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 now, or over the next year or two
