2002 Vintage Fortified
Concentrated, Balanced and Built to Endure
At 24 years of age, the 2002 Vintage Fortified is one of the finest wines Chris Killeen ever made, and that is saying something. A blend of Shiraz, Touriga Nacional, Durif, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz, this is a wine of exceptional concentration, balance and longevity, awarded 96 points by James Halliday who described it as a totally delicious vintage port style with an elegance no other young Australian vintage ports approach.
The colour remains deep and youthful, a remarkable quality for a wine of this age. The bouquet is lifted and complex, with bramble fruit, boysenberry and a touch of conserve and liqueur woven through an array of florals and sweet baking spices that keep the nose fresh, fragrant and endlessly interesting.
On the palate, the wine is generous and expansive, with big blackberry, raspberry jam and pomegranate flavours carrying across a palate of excellent concentration and structure. The tannins are gripping and present, providing a firm backbone that underpins everything without ever feeling heavy. The finish is really long, fresh and beautifully balanced, with a sense of energy and vitality that points clearly to many more decades of rewarding development ahead.
Based on where this wine sits today, the best is very likely still to come. A truly exceptional Vintage Fortified and one of the standout releases in the S&K story.
